When the first shipment of Targhee IVs arrived in the UK, the phrase “Out-of-the-box comfort” immediately sparked skepticism. How could a technical, waterproof hiking shoe be ready for the trail straight from the box? Surely, some breaking-in would be required?
To put this claim to the test, KEEN’s marketing team decided to take the Targhee IV on a real-world trial. Most of their time during the week is spent at desks, creating content from the confines of an office. It was time for a change, time to get outside. The beautiful village of Edale was the chosen destination. Nestled in the Peak District of Derbyshire, its mountainous, muddy terrain provided the perfect environment to assess the "Out-of-the-box comfort" claims.
Before getting into the testing, let’s talk about the Targhee IV. The most notable change from the Targhee III to the Targhee IV is the introduction of KEEN.FUSION Technology, which fundamentally changes how the boots and shoes are constructed. In the Targhee III, the sole was cemented to the upper using solvents and adhesives, whereas in the Targhee IV, the sole is mechanically bonded to the upper through injection.

Key facts about the Targhee IV
- Abrasion-resistant KEEN.RUGGED outsole for durable, longer-lasting traction.
- KEEN.DRY waterproof, breathable membrane seals out moisture from the inside.
- Environmentally preferred premium leather from an LWG-certified tannery for cleaner water.
- Eco anti-odour for natural, pesticide-free odour control.
- Original fit provides generous space across the forefoot for toes to splay.
With the facts covered, it was time to start testing.
The day began at 6 AM, with two members of the KEEN team, Dylan and Brendan, setting off from Sheffield on a 40-minute journey to Edale. Upon arrival at the campsite around 7 AM, they immediately changed out of their everyday trainers and into the Targhee IVs. Dylan chose the Targhee IV Boot in Sea Turtle/Roasted Pecan, while Brendan opted for the Targhee IV Shoe in Bison/Black.
First Impressions:
For Brendan, the roomy toe box was immediately noticeable. For those with average-sized feet, the fit was ideal, though sizing down by half a size proved beneficial. The ankle mobility in the shoe style provided an easy transition from sneakers, and the shoe felt stable and solid while maintaining excellent ground feel.
Dylan, accustomed to tight-fitting climbing shoes, found the Targhee IV to be a treat. Sizing down from an 8.5 to an 8 accommodated the roomier toe box, providing a comfortable fit. The boots were lighter than expected, which was a welcome surprise, especially given his choice of the mid-boot style for additional ankle support following a recent injury. The added height gave him confidence that he would have no issues tackling the trail.
With initial impressions made, the hike began. The route led through the charming countryside village of Edale, passing the Old Nag’s Head pub, though fish and chips would have to wait until after earning them on the trail.
The hike started with ideal weather conditions for March in the Peak District: sunny and 2°C. That soon changed. Over the course of the day, every type of UK weather made an appearance—snow, hail, rain, and sun. However, at no point was there a complaint about cold feet.
The Targhee IVs continued to impress. Comfort and support were crucial for the team, and the shoes exceeded expectations. Early in the hike, rain turned the previously dry ground into muddy terrain. Concerns about slipping quickly dissipated thanks to the KEEN.RUGGED outsole and the Targhee IV’s multi-directional lug pattern.
For those familiar with the Pennine Way, the flat stone slabs that line the path can become incredibly slippery with even the slightest rain. However, the Targhee IVs performed admirably, providing the necessary grip and stability.

As the hike continued, the local sheep provided their own vocal encouragement, adding to the charm of the adventure. After a mile, the team took a break for photos, capturing the breathtaking scenery of the Peak District.
During the brief rest, there was an opportunity to reflect on the performance of the Targhee IV. The ankle-height Targhee shoe provided the best of both worlds—a tough, durable hiker with the comfort of an everyday trainer. Ankle mobility was a key selling point. Dylan’s experience was similar; where he would typically find brand-new boots a bit stiff, the Targhee IVs were flexible enough to handle the changing terrain conditions.
The day continued with more hiking. By the end, each had logged close to 14,000 steps, all in the Targhee IVs.
In the introduction, skepticism was expressed regarding the “Out-of-the-box comfort” claim. After a full day in the Peaks, the verdict was clear: those doubts were unfounded.
Rather than continuing with more praise, let’s get into the numbers:
- Blisters accumulated: 0
- Complaints about achy feet: 0
- Smiles on faces at the end of a long day on the trail: 2
- Pairs of dry socks at day's end: 2
- Fish & Chips consumed at The Old Nag's Head: 1
In conclusion, the Targhee IV truly delivers on its "Out-of-the-Box Comfort" promise. For those still skeptical, the best way to find out is to test them firsthand.
